All the poultry are fed with a ration of mixed wheat maize and some soya cattlecake for proteins. They also have a complement of calcium that they use parcially for there egg shell making but mostly as something hard for their gizzard, wet bread, salade and pasta...
A egg takes 3 weeks to hatch and the chick that comes out will take 18 weeks to start laying... if then after all that it is a hen !

The Grises du Gers hens

These 10 pullets were born in september 2007. They are a cross breed of the strain of the "Gris du Gers" and come from the hatchery "Grelier" at L'Isle Jourdain. They were given to us by a friend, Leslie, from our year promotion. ^Before being let go into the chicken pen they stayed a month in a rondents cage, and I looked after them all day every day. They are now very sociable with humains, always interrested in what is going on. They come and see you as soon as you get in the pen.
They started to lay mid-january 2008. One of the hens is often broody, this means that she spends most of her day laying on the other chickens egg and protecting them.
